Well yesterday was training day. I trained on cashier. We did a lot of paperwork and also a lot of demo-ing on the actual cashier computer with it in training mode. It's a lot to know!
The machine has about 10 buttons and also number keys. Each button makes a menu come up of various things to do. For example the "coupon" button brings up a few types of coupon and ways to reduce price. The "tender" button is what I hit when I've scanned all the groceries in and people are ready to pay. Then a menu comes up where I select which method of payment. Those are the easy buttons. Others have submenus. Ack.
So, yesterday was frantic and I was rather anxious, but I managed. It was fun learning all that new stuff even tho it was waaaay information overload.
Today I started an added job that I'd applied for and got - called "file management." It's so far just pulling down old price tags from the shelves and putting up new ones. It's quite persnickety reading all the codes and also the bending and stretching to reach. It's relaxing tho. No pressure to dash about.
Cashier is pressure, especially remembering everything and trying to be quick with the scanning and packing.
After about 1 hr doing file maintenance, it got busy at the till and I was called to the front to help. I totally didn't feel ready and had hoped for more 1-1 training, but I jumped right in and just shouted across to the next cashier when I got stuck.
All the customers were great when I told them I was in training and it was only my 2nd day. (Except one jerky guy who had only 1 item of pop and wanted smokes. He muttered stupid things under his breath, but I ignored it. To bad for him, I was doing my best.
So for the rest of my 8 hr shift today I went back & forth between putting up sale tags (file maint) & cashier, depending on how busy it was.
