Got up at 7 to have breakfast with Dad n Bev. Then off to turn in rental car. Hanging out at Pam n Lorne's until airport time, but we did hike to the "cross" on the mountain behind their house. We wanted some exercise before sitting all the rest of the day.
All the guests at Pam n Lorne's place are taking turns cooking a dinner. We made that chicken dish and that tabbouleh salad. There were 10 people so Clint bought 3 medium sized chickens. It took a long time to do but turned out delicious. We went for groceries at 11:30 am, then I started prep at 1:30. Lined bottom of toaster with spuds, baby carrots, shallots, garlic. Birds went in at 3pm, and done at 5:30. Started salad at 3 and finished at 3:45. At 5:30, rested the birds for 20 min. while making gravy. Ate at 6. Clint also bought 2 fantastic pies; he got one chocolate pie and one lemon cream pie.
As a surprise, Dad n Bev drove to visit us from Salome, Arizona. Yay! They made it for dinner. That was nice. Went for a short hike around Coachella Valley Preserve. It's a true oasis and on the San Andreas fault. We go there every time we come to Palm Desert. It's pretty neat. Yesterday was Xmas Day. Awoke to a little bit of gift opening, then we picked up our rental car in San D and drove 200 miles to Palm Springs. I FINALLY got a couple great photos of the horses jumping the road sculpture! Here's the photo dump.
Slept in a bit later than usual, though, so Clint gently jostled me at 8:45 and reminded me that the continental breakfast closed at 9. So I leapt out of bed and dashed down for my usual (& favourite) vacation hotel breakfast of waffles and scrambled eggs. Then we cycled around a bit to work off that food and make a hole for some more. A couple pictures below, but I didn't take many today. By the way, it was cold and very windy today! oh ... and I had to take this photo of a sign in women's washroom at Modern Times brewery pub. I think it's hysterical!! :-D
despite the neat pics here at top, scroll to bottom to start the day. In Aguanga, there is this steel horse sculpture that is wild horses jumping a cliff over the road. It is SPECTACULAR! I have tried photographing it several times, but I can never get a shot the shows how awesome it is! This is another attempt. The top two photos are just clips from the internet to show how great this guy's art is. He does a lot of dinosaurs too, not just horses. (Weird choice if you ask me ... dinosaurs?) Um ... yeah. Really, really thick fog- and cold and wet. We could only see a few feet in front of us. We turned our hazard flashers on and hoped no one would drive up onto us. Oh ya, don't forget that we were on a motorcycle! AND WE HAD TO DRIVE BACK THROUGH THIS ON OUR TRIP BACK! argh. We made it though. Just biked around all day. Punctuated that with eating! Yummy!!
